Got a killer videogame idea? Skills strong enough for a spot on a game development team? Then get paid to build your game this summer in the 2009 GameGarage on beautiful PEI.

GameGarageCharlettetown PEI – Canadian gamers who are graduating from or are recent graduates of interactive media programs are invited to compete for five spots on the 2009 GameGame Videogame Incubator Team where they will work with mentors from PEI’s gaming industry to build a functioning game prototype. And they get paid.

GameGarage is co-presented by Telefilm Canada and PEI Business Development Inc. and managed by the Interactive Media Alliance (IMA), a PEI-based interactive media industry association based out of the Atlantic Technology Centre, Charlottetown, PEI.

GameGarage gives participants the necessary studio space, hardware, software, salary and
mentorship required to make their game idea a reality.

· Application deadline May 15, 2009
· Dates July 2 to September 30, 2009
· Location Atlantic Technology Centre, Charlottetown, PEI
· Positions available Programmers, designers, artists, producers
· Salary $2,000/month for 3 months

The 2008 GameGarage team created an adventure game prototype called Kingdom of Gnester. “GameGarage was awesome. I’ve broadened my programming knowledge and gained key project management skills,” said Kingdom of Gnester designer/producer Nicholas McKinnon of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia.

“We wrestled with real game development issues: design choices, programming roadblocks, art issues. But our IMA mentors helped us work through these obstacles and we met the deadline to demo a working prototype at the GameGarage Gala…we were all pretty pumped,” said McKinnon.

An added benefit for both GameGarage participants and mentors is they learn about and from
each other, and that can lead to employment opportunities in PEI’s surprisingly robust interactive media industry.

IMA President John Eden said local new media company leaders volunteer as GameGarage mentors and see team members at work. “It was really great that in 2008, local interactive media companies witnessed team member talent first hand and, by the end of the summer, all five team members had been hired by local gaming and related companies.”

There are two ways to apply:

1. Submit a game concept including the following elements:

a. Game development document
b. Technical development document
c. 2-4 page marketing summary

2. Submit a resume if you want a spot on the 2009 GameGarage Team. Include appropriate art work and/or game code samples that demonstrate your worthiness to be on the Team and build the prototype of the winning concept above.

On completion of the 2009 GameGarage program, team members will receive their game prototype and supporting documentation so they can submit their game concept to development conferences and award competitions.
