Toronto Screenwriting Conference Announces Telefilm Canada New Voices Award Winners

toronto screenwriting conferenceThe Toronto Screenwriting Conference (TSC) has announced the recipients of the Telefilm Canada New Voices Award. Of the fifty-five applicants from across the country, five emerging writers have been selected. Each winner will receive a complimentary registration to the 2013 conference as well as an exclusive lunch with TSC founder and president of Meridian Artists Literary Agency, Glenn Cockburn. The fourth annual Toronto Screenwriting Conference takes place on April 6 & 7, 2013.

The Telefilm Canada New Voices Award winners are

  • Gloria Ui Young Kim (Toronto)
  • Margaret Rose Lester (Mississauga)
  • Maurey Loeffler (Toronto)
  • Piers Rae (Vancouver)
  • Nathalie Younglai (Toronto)

Gloria, Margaret, Rose, Maurey, Piers and Nathalie, will join other writers, producers and directors from across Canada and the U.S., to listen and learn from Marquee speakers including:

  • Beau Willimon (House of Cards, Ides of March)
  • Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead, The Shield)
  • Aaron Korsch (Suits)

As well as session speakers:

  • David Hudgins (Parenthood, Friday Night Lights)
  • Tassie Cameron (Rookie Blue, Flashpoint)
  • Daegan Fryklind (Motive, The Listener)
  • Kevin White (InSecurity, Dan for Mayor)
  • Bob Kushell (Anger Management)
  • Vander Caballero (Papo & Yo)
  • Kathleen McCaffrey, Director of Original Content HBO
  • Dara Marks, author
  • Penny Penniston, author

“It wasn’t an easy decision to select the winners from the many qualified contenders. The number of remarkable applicants for the Telefilm Canada New Voices Award is a clear indication of the amazing writing talent ready to burst onto the Canadian screen-based industry,” said Heidi Tao Yang, Toronto Screenwriting Conference producer.

Carolle Brabant, Executive Director of Telefilm Canada, added “Telefilm Canada is proud to support the Toronto Screenwriting Conference. We congratulate the recipients of the Telefilm Canada New Voices Award. Telefilm is thrilled to have the opportunity to support emerging screenwriters in their pursuit of excellence, new prospects and new partnerships. This award recognizes promising writers and allows them to gain invaluable experience, build their careers and in the future to contribute to the successes of the Canadian film industry.”

The eligible applicants must have written at least two short films of which one has been produced, have written one feature length screenplay, TV pilot or series treatment. They must not have previously produced a feature or TV series, or previously received Telefilm Canada funding. All applicants were asked to write a brief note about how the Toronto Screenwriting Conference will assist in their professional development and about a writer who has most inspired their screenwriting.
