CMF Funds Ten Francophone Minority Program Projects

Canada Media Fund The Canada Media Fund has announced that 10 Convergent Stream productions have been awarded $7.2M from the Francophone Minority Program, which supports productions that reflect the realities and interests of French communities outside of Quebec. Since 2010, the CMF has contributed $47.0M to 128 Francophone Minority projects. Canadian audiences will be able to enjoy productions from various parts of the country including two from BC, one from Manitoba, two from New Brunswick, and five from Ontario. Of the 10 convergent productions, each of which are created for television and have a digital media component, four are Children’s & Youth, four are Documentaries, and two are Dramas:

The series Le clan uses three original interactive modules to explore the double lives of informants and the mysterious world they inhabit. The Internet site combines a six-episode documentary web series about informants, a web application that allows users to create a fake criminal identity and a social mosaic where users are invited to share secrets.

Jean-François Gagnon is actually Yannick “the Crab” Moreau, a reformed ex-criminal from New Brunswick who, after years of involvement in the drug underworld in partnership with his father and brothers, was finally brought to justice. Harsh and challenging, the Yukon Quest is the world’s most difficult dogsled race. The route follows a series of trails between Whitehorse in the Yukon and Fairbanks, Alaska. Held annually in February since 1984, this long, gruelling race takes place under severe meteorological conditions, with temperatures as low as -50°C, at a time when the sun barely rises above the horizon. The purpose of the Yukon Quest site is to introduce viewers to the documentary series of the same name by presenting an interactive map of the dogsled course complete with obstacles and eleven control points. By clicking on a control point, users can access a range of information: amusing anecdotes, statistics, a slice of history and fascinating complementary background material. The site includes a page called “Rencontrez nos passionnés,” where visitors can read mini-biographies and view short interviews with mushers, handlers and volunteers participating in the event. The sled dogs also have their own section that includes photos and entertaining descriptions profiling their personality and skills.

Galala, the television show, features the talents of young performers aged 5 to 15 from ten different Canadian cities. The first series takes viewers on the road from British Columbia (Kelowna) to New Brunswick (Dieppe and Moncton). In every episode, contestants showcase their talent for singing, music, dance, comedy, public speaking, magic, acrobatics and other entertaining, original or crazy routines. Before the young performers take to the stage, they are introduced to viewers through short segments about their unique talent, personality, school and family life, dreams, fears and more. The documentary series Garde-manger introduces the people behind the organic label by telling their stories and challenges. Canada is seen from a fresh perspective as the show explores magnificent rural landscapes and urban organic initiatives. Each episode of the series examines a specific theme. The many challenges faced by organic farmers has been broken down into thirteen different themes.

Each episode in the series Les îles de l’Atlantique opens a window onto one of five island microcosms lying on our continent’s doorstep: Fogo Island (Newfoundland), Grand Manan (New Brunswick), Miscou Island (New Brunswick), Isle Madame (Nova Scotia) and Lennox Island (Prince Edward Island). Les jumelles is a series developed for the 9 to 12 age group.
