Game Jam The Documentary

mini-orby [1]Toronto’s D.A.R.C. Productions Inc. [2] has begun production on a documentary about game jams and the developers who participate in them. The first round of footage was shot during the Toronto segment of the Global Game Jam, shadowing four teams throughout the event as they took a game from concept to playable in one weekend. In this introductory trailer you’ll see developers trying to describe a game jam with just one word.

D.A.R.C. Productions has opened a fundraising initiative on IndieGoGo [3] in an attempt to raise enough funds for the camera crew to travel to GDC in San Francisco, where they intend to shoot more footage and interview game developers from around the world. At press time, the team was $240.00 along the way to meeting their two week goal of raising $4,500.00.

There are several perks available for different contribution levels, including having the camera crew attend your own game jam, film it, and then produce a trailer reel for your event. This top-level perk comes with a $ 10,000.00 price tag, but there are smaller, more affordable perks ranging from $10.00 for a digital HD copy of Game Jam The Documentary as well as your name in the Special Thanks section of the film.

A $20.00 contribution will get you the digital HD copy of the documentary plus a Game Jam The Documentary Poster featuring artwork by Miguel Sternberg of Spooky Squid Games [4]. Miguel has done pixel art on Scott Pilgram & Crank. For $ 50.00, you get the digital HD movie, the poster, and a Game Jam The Documentary T-shirt. If you want all three of these perks plus a hoodie, you will need to contribute $100.00.

If your studio needs a promo reel, a $500.00 contribution will net you a promo video to be shown on the “Support Your Local Game Developer” portion of the Game Jam Documentary website. This perk will include a short biography, your company logo and a short video of your projects. We will work with you to put this together and you will retain rights to all content for use in the future. All previously listed perks included (except the $10, 000.00 one).

The final perk being offered for game developers is the opportunity to have a GJD director fly to your city and film a one on one interview with you to document your personal experiences at game jams, to be used in the film. Major cities only. You will also receive an Associate Producer credit (Film & IMDB) and all previous rewards except the $500.00 video portfolio.
