Independent Montreal studio Red Barrels has announced that its first title – PC survival-horror experience Outlast – will be playable for the first time as part of the PAX East Indie MegaBooth in Boston, March 22-24. Attendees will be given a chance to walk the corridors of Mount Massive Asylum in the shoes of investigative reporter Miles Upshur as he tries to escape the evils that roam the complex’s halls. The Toronto Screenwriting Conference (TSC) has announced the recipients of the Telefilm Canada New Voices Award. Of the fifty-five applicants from across the country, five emerging writers have been selected. Each winner will receive a complimentary registration to the 2013 conference as well as an exclusive lunch with TSC founder and president of Meridian Artists Literary Agency, Glenn Cockburn. DHX Media Ltd. has announced a multi-year merchandising and licensing representation deal with Russian agent Icon Promotions. Icon Promotions will represent DHX Media’s popular kids TV series Animal Mechanicals, Johnny Test and the Richard Scarry collection, which includes Vintage Richard Scarry and Hurray For Huckle, at the Russian Licensing Forum in Moscow March 13-15.  Hurray for Huckle currently airs on local broadcaster Carousel, Channel 1, while Johnny Test is broadcast on Cartoon Network Russia. Ottawa-based indie mobile games company, RocknRolla Games has announced that it will be releasing a free version of its popular game Color-Shift. RocknRolla Games has also integrated new features for the free game. Some of the new features are Facebook and Twitter in app integration, and a new results screen to detail user’s game statistics. Color-Shift Free will be released to Apple’s App Store on March 17^th 2013 and will run on all Apple supported iOS devices (iPhone 3gs, iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPad 2, iPad 3, and iPad Mini). Eon Altar is a new cooperative role-playing adventure that blends the experience of classic tabletop gaming and modern video games in a Tabletop Video Game. We had a sit-down chat with Flying Helmet Games‘ Project Director Edward Douglas a couple of weeks ago, and found the game and its mechanics to be rather intriguing. Personally, I think that Eon Altar will be a great way to bring back family game night, as it bridges the gap between those of us who played Dungeons & Dragons in high school and our digital kids. The nature of Eon Altar’s game play could also open doors for connecting with kids and encouraging conversation as quests are undertaken, feats are attempted, treasure is uncovered and beasts are defeated. Cardup enables anyone to call their family or friends located anywhere in the world for a low price. The app provides a way to avoid the expensive call rates to reach people overseas, offering the cheapest rates anywhere to make calls. Cardup provides an alternative to even modern technological communications such as VoIP systems, which require both calling parties to have the same application in place.
