At an event held yesterday morning, Telefilm Canada presented its eighth annual Guichet d’or award to director and screenwriter Xavier Dolan for his film Mommy, the French-language feature that had the highest domestic box-office earnings in 2014, at $3.3 million. The award comes with a cash prize of $40,000 ($20,000 for the director and $20,000 for the screenwriter). Attending the event were actress Anne Dorval, producer Nancy Grant of Metafilms, Victor Rego, Senior Vice-President – Marketing and Distribution, of Les Films Séville, Anick Poirier, Vice-President of International Sales, also of Les Films Séville, as well as several major players in Canada’s audiovisual industry. The Canada Media FundThe Canada Media Fund (CMF) congratulates the winners and nominees of the 2015 Canadian Screen Awards, which have been recognized for their excellence by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, and industry professionals at a series of events which culminated with last night’s televised gala. A total of 27 CMF-funded productions won 51 Canadian Screen Awards, including top winners such as Call Me Fitz, Degrassi, Sensitive Skin, Tales from the Organ Trade, Bomb Girls, and the Fan’s Choice Award, Lost Girl. Creative BC has announced the recipients of the 2014/15 Slate Development Fund, a provincially funded program, administered by Creative BC, that provides BC-based film or television entertainment companies with an envelope of money to support the development of two or more eligible film, television or web series projects. The fund is intended to leverage investment from the private sector, develop a presence in the international marketplace and encourage the use of digital platforms for marketing, distribution and audience engagement. Ten Canadian feature films will be screened at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, a record for Canada at Sundance. This outstanding selection will also include five shorts and three video installations. With 10 feature films out of a programmed 123 features, Canada will present the third-largest line-up at Sundance—accounting for 8% of the overall selection—after the United States and the United Kingdom. Ubisoft Montreal was named Studio of the Year at the prestigious Golden Joystick Awards presented in London, UK. This prize, voted for by players around the world, was given to its President and CEO, Mr. Yannis Mallat, during the awards ceremony last Friday. The Canada Media Fund (CMF) congratulates the winners of the 29th prix Gémeaux who received awards on September 11 and 14. With these awards, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (ACCT) recognizes the outstanding work of industry professionals in the French language market. The Academy nominated 85 CMF-funded projects that received a combined total of 267 nominations. Of those, 30 productions won a total of 66 Gémeaux Awards, including top winners such as Série Noire, Les Beaux Malaises, Infoman, and the People’s Choice Award winner, Unité 9.
