Salmon Arm BC – Canada’s first digital 3D film festival is set for a classic movie house in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. Askew’s Foods and Pepsi are proud to present the world’s largest digital 3D film festival ‘It Came From The 3d Dimension’ on the shores of the Shuswap Lake in the interior of British Columbia. The festival will feature eleven digital 3D films over a two week period playing at the Salmar Classic Theatre, March 13th to 26th, 2009.
Shawn Greek, the event’s organizer, believes people will share in his enthusiasm for this fantastic new way to see movies. “This isn’t your grandfather’s 3D,” Greek says. “Comparing this 3D to the old style with red and blue glasses is like comparing a scooter to a Ferrari. It’s an immersive experience of unparalleled quality, and you really do have to see it to believe it. What’s more, most people have never appreciated these movies in their native format, digital 3D, and most of these films may never be seen again on the big screen”.

Investing in the Future of BC’s Science and Technology Industry
Vancouver – The PMC-Sierra Science Fair Fun Run celebrates its 10th anniversary of building BC’s future by supporting science and technology education. The Fun Run is the largest timed 5K race in BC and is one of the technology industry’s biggest fundraising events. All proceeds from this event go to The Dr. Michael Smith Science Fair Endowment to support the promotion and development of Science Fair programs throughout the province. Registration is now open for the event, which takes place on Sunday, May 31, 2009, at TELUS World of Science.
“Without funds from events like the PMC-Sierra Science Fair Fun Run, 60,000 students who participate in local fairs across BC each year would not have the opportunity to advance their projects and develop important skills like entrepreneurship, creativity and confidence,” says Patti Leigh, executive director of the Science Fair Foundation of BC. “Given the economic climate, it’s even more important to invest in our future, and we’re doing that by helping students become the great minds that will drive BC’s innovation economy into the future.”

Vancouver – Over the past two weeks I haven’t had as much time as usual to search out the news from Canada’s digital media industry, so I’m taking a different angle tonight to catch up on a few things. One of the reasons for the busy schedule on our end was a visit to Vancouver by representatives of World Cyber Games, Inc. They have been visiting cities around the world scouting possible future locations for a variety of World Cyber Games events. During their visit, the representatives had a chance to tour Relic Entertainment, EA Burnaby, the Great Northern Way Campus, the Electric Playground studio, then attended a small reception hosted by Radical Entertainment and the SIGGRAPH presentation of Modern Princesses given by Ubisoft Montreal – but more on that later in this post. Thank you to everyone who took part in the tours and events.
The month began in the best way possible with the Game Design Expo presented by Vancouver Film School. This two day expo which features the top guest speakers is one of the consistently best-run events around. Every seminar and panel topic was relevant to today’s game development industry, and it’s small wonder why GDX sells out every year. Over the next short time, I will be posting articles about the seminars – and hopefully once you’ve read them, if you weren’t at GDX this year, you’ll make a note to attend next year. Aside from the myriad of topics and opportunities to learn, the biggest announcement at this year’s event was the estalishment of the Women In Games International $30 000.00 – $47 000.00 full scholarship. This scholarship will provide full tuition for a female game design student to attend the VFS Game Design Programme. Other scholarships announced range from $2000.00 to $7000.00, and are sponsored by G4techTV, EA, Big Fish Games, Annex Pro, Obsidian Entertainment, and Radical Entertainment.
