BCIC – New Ventures has named the 25 companies moving on to Round 3 of its competition. These companies will now be paired up with team mentors and will participate in the mentors’ panels and seminars. Toronto Animation Arts Festival International (TAAFI) has announced an animation-focused pitch event, Pitch-a-Palooza, and two supporting events, Pitch Lab and The Monkeyworks. Telefilm Canada is pleased to announce that it will be an exceptional year for Canadian cinema at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, held annually in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Czech Republic (June 29 to July 7). Best Buy Canada teamed up with nine communities in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto to help collect and recycle electronic waste as part of the Tech it Away program this year. As a result of this one-day event, the stores collected more than 42,000 pounds of e-waste from local residents, with TV and computer monitors making up the majority of items returned. Writers of short fiction are encouraged to enter the Alice Munro Writers and Readers Festival’s 2012 Short Story Competition. Bruno’s Blues premieres in Toronto at the Carlton Cinema. The film, with an indie, cult and jazz audience appeal, opens in Late Night Summer Madness screenings from June 23 – 30 coinciding with the Toronto Jazz Festival. California-based cloud communications company Twilio and SendGrid, a Colorado-based email deliverability company, have announced the inaugural DOer Express, a bus for entrepreneurs en route to the International Startup Festival in Montreal. The DOer Express, in partnership with Bessemer Venture Partners and Microsoft, will be leaving from New York City on July 11, and will transport 46 early stage startup founders while offering mentoring from top entrepreneurs, members of the startup community and technical advisors, such as Craig Kitterman, Technical Product Manager on the Windows Azure team at Microsoft.
