Social media is gaining a foothold in Canada’s workplaces, with personal and professional use overlapping at work, according to the latest survey results from global workforce solutions provider Kelly Services®. A new poll of 400 Canadian business leaders by Queen’s School of Business reveals decidedly mixed feelings about social media. While four in ten (39 per cent) bosses say social media is something they need to use—whether they want to or not —close to an equal number (35 per cent) say they use it heavily because it’s a good opportunity for the business, with the remaining 24 per cent saying it doesn’t add any value. Young Canadians are facing a host of privacy risks that previous generations never had to worry about – from “nanny cams” to cell phone monitoring to a permanent trail of their online communications, says the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. Youth privacy issues have emerged as a significant concern and are highlighted in the Commissioner’s 2011 Annual Report to Parliament on the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Canada’s federal private-sector privacy law.
