Canada’s largest telecommunications union has submitted a brief to the CRTC backing the demand of consumer and public interest groups for a national wireless code to protect consumer interests. As much as $4 billion is lost to consumers due to a lack of regulation in the telco industry, the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada notes in its submission to the CRTC’s Telecom Notice of Consultation. A War Amps public service announcement, Rebecca and The Roughriders, has won a Gold Award at this year’s WorldFest-Houston competition, along with The War Amps Matteo PSA and longer profile Matteo’s Story.  WorldFest Houston is one of the oldest and largest film and video competitions in the world, with more than 4,500 category entries received from 37 countries in 2011. Friends of Canadian Broadcasting launched an online vote this morning to select the People’s Pick for the next Chair of the CBC. Voting has begun online on the Friends website. The term of current chair Timothy Casgrain expired this week and the government has published a notice of vacancy to fill the position with someone who must be able to get along with the Minister of Canadian Heritage. This new resource helps developers and engineers quickly learn the basics of Bluetooth device and application design, allowing them to tap into a huge new market for software applications that integrate with hardware running Bluetooth low energy technology. On May 3, 2012, the Kids’ Internet Safety Alliance (Kinsa) will host the second annual Spring for Kids Gala at Waddington’s Auction House. The Gala is Kinsa’s largest fundraising event through the year, providing the organization with important funds needed to protect and rescue child victims of online abuse. IAB Canada has announced that long-time President, Paula Gignac will step down from her current position, beginning September 1, 2012. Gignac, who has led IAB Canada since September 2004, is moving out of the Greater Toronto Area for the next two years (where IAB Canada’s main office is located), in support of her partner who will pursue a Masters Degree elsewhere in Ontario.
