NFB March Animation Events At Toronto Mediatheque

National Film BoardToronto – There are some great Animation workshops and events coming up this March at the NFB Mediatheque in Toronto. With a wide variety of activities, there is something for just about everyone, and these events are family funding friendly and educational.

Animation Exploration Screening Programmes

Every day during March Break (March 14-22), join us for two fun-filled programs of animated shorts for the whole family! Admission is $2 per person, or FREE with registration to a March Break animation workshop.

Program A: March 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 AT 2 PM each day
Ruzz & Ben, Emission Admission, My Grandmother Ironed the King’s Shirts, Oh Sure, I Want a Dog, and The Tender Tale of Cinderella Penguin (approximate running time: 1 hour)

Program B: March 15, 17, 19, 21 at 2 PM each day
Sleeping Betty, Hothouse 5: Square Roots, The Danish Poet, The Owl Who Married a Goose, Getting Started, and Blackfly (approximate running time: 51 min)

March Break Animation Exploration

Do you want to discover the world during March Break? Now you can… during ANIMATION EXPLORATION!

ANIMATION EXPLORATION is a series of hands-on animation workshops for children aged 6 to 14 years old and their parents.  Workshops are offered twice a day, at 12 PM and 3 PM. Sign up today for only $5 per child. Parents can join the fun at no extra cost. See below for workshop themes and materials, and call 416-973-3012 to reserve your spot today.

Looking for a more in-depth experience? Sign up for our WEEK-LONG ANIMATION EXPLORATION CAMP for children aged 8 to 14.  From Monday to Friday (9:30 AM to 4:30 PM), participants will work in teams to create their own original animated film.  Your film will premiere on the BIG SCREEN on Friday afternoon at the NFB Cinema! (Limited enrolment. $275 per child. Pre- and post- care available at extra cost. Call 416-973-7114.)

Saturday, March 14 – Underground Adventure
clay – Discover and animate a lost dinosaur civilization deep in the earth’s core!

Sunday, March 15 – Outer Space Adventure
drawing on film – Blast off into outer space and animate alien life on a faraway planet!

Monday, March 16 – Underwater Adventure
paper cut-out – Plunge beneath the ocean’s surface and animate your deep-sea adventure!

Tuesday, March 17 – Urban Adventure
clay – Animate your wild journey on a busy subway car!

Wednesday, March 18 – Rainforest Adventure
paper cut-out, strings
Spin a web as an animated spider in the Mediatheque jungle!

Thursday, March 19 – Arctic Adventure
painting on glass – Create patterns in the snow and ice using this exciting animation technique!

Friday, March 20 – Mountain Climbing Adventure
clay – Scale to the snowy peaks of the Mediatheque’s mountain range!

Saturday, March 21 – Supernatural Adventure
pixilation – Make yourself appear, disappear, float or fly using the magic of stop-motion animation!

Sunday, March 22 – Desert Adventure
sand and clay – Travel to the pyramids and animate your encounters with sand-dwelling creatures!

Animation Workshops For Adults

The National Film Board of Canada in partnership with the Images Festival presents ANIMATION WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS

Take Two: Animation Remix Workshop for Adults
March 23, 6:30 PM

Find inspiration in Oscar Peterson’s soundtrack from Norman McLaren’s award- winning experimental film Begone Dull Care and create your own interpretation! Using the tools and techniques pioneered by the legendary filmmaker, create your own short film by drawing, painting and scratching directly on 35 mm film. Films created in the workshop will be screened in the NFB Cinema along with Begone Dull Care and a selection of award-winning animated shorts from the NFB.

Animate This! Grown-up Edition
March 24, 6:30 PM

Have you been craving to crash a kids workshop? Here’s your chance! Get your hands dirty with modelling clay and create your own stop-motion animated film! Using professional tools and guided by NFB facilitators, bring your ideas to life.  All films will debut in the NFB Cinema, along with a screening program highlighting new and award-winning NFB stop-motion films including Sainte Barbe, The Necktie, as well as the Norman McLaren classic, A ChairyTale.

Unleash your inner Norman McLaren! Experiment with pixilation, painting on glass, drawing and scratching on film, and stop-motion to bring your ideas to the big screen. Move from station to station as your experimental masterpiece comes to life. Watch your films in the NFB Cinema along with a collection of films highlighting each technique, including A Chairy Tale, Pas de Deux, and Le Merle.

FREE for Images Festival patrons. Ages: 18 +. For non-animators. These workshops are designed to present an introduction to McLaren’s techniques and legacy at the NFB, and are not professional filmmaking workshops.
