The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation marked the announcement of its 2012 Literacy Grants with a significant milestone. The Foundation has now funded 1,000,000 books for high-need school libraries across the country. The 20 elementary schools who are the recipients of this year’s $1.5 million allocation will receive individual grants of up to $195,000 over the next three years, with the common purpose of stocking the schools’ libraries with new books so that the young students can reap the life-long benefits of reading. Canada is continuing its mission to combat transnational crime in the Caribbean Basin by providing Barbados with ballistics identification equipment manufactured by Montreal-based Forensic Technology Inc. The Honorable Diane Ablonczy, Canada’s Minister of State of Foreign Affairs, announced earlier this month that Canada and the Caribbean states are establishing a Regional Integrated Ballistic Information Network (RIBIN) for the Caribbean Basin, with an initial investment of $800,000. Those funds will be used to purchase IBIS TRAX-3D equipment that the Royal Barbados Police Force can use to link crimes, guns and suspects, both locally and throughout the Caribbean to other IBIS-equipped sites. Canada’s .CA turns 25 years old today. It was on this day in 1987 that the .CA top-level domain was officially delegated by Jon Postel, operator of Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), to John Demco at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Demco and a group of volunteers ran the registry for 13 years. Since 2000, the registry for .CA domain names has been run by the Ottawa-based Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA).
