It was another bull’s eye for Vancouver-shot Arrow (pun intended) as 1.3 million viewers tuned in to its special CTV premiere Sunday night. Following its historic CTV Two debut Wednesday as the network’s most-watched series premiere on record (1.1 million viewers), Arrow delivered another million-plus audience to finish #4 for the night, behind only The Amazing Race (#1, 2.7 million viewers), Once Upon A Time (#2, 1.7 million viewers and another locally shot series) and The Mentalist (#3, 1.6 million viewers). As the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival (SJIWFF) kicks off its five-day festival with a screening of Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children, Telefilm Canada and the Canada Media Fund are encouraging more Canadians to get out and experience great Canadian talent and film. The sold-out event is expected to attract more than 1,000 people this evening. Established in 1989, the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival attracts over 4,000 participants and aims to promote and support women filmmakers. The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced the Harper Government’s intention to introduce legislation creating the Canadian Museum of History, the first in a series of measures on the road to Canada’s 150thbirthday in 2017. In order to achieve this, the Harper Government plans to introduce amendments to the Museums Act to change the name and mandate of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Minister Moore made the announcement at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in the presence of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, Museum staff, eminent Canadian historians, and members of historical associations from across Canada. A majority – almost 60% — of Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) say they intend to invest in their businesses within the next 12 months, according to a survey on investment intentions released today by the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). Entrepreneurs say they plan to invest in Machinery & Equipment, Human Resources, working capital for marketing, and Information Technologies to increase their productivity. A growing number of Canadian women are leaving the traditional workforce to join the emerging trend of female home-based entrepreneurs. Statistics Canada reports 951,600 self-employed women in Canada as of July 2012, up from 790,400 10 years ago. The agency says self-employment in Canada has grown as fast among women as it has among men in the past 20 years. Even more recently in times of economic uncertainty, the rate of self-employed women has grown faster than men. In 2009, a year of downturn for the labour market, the number of self-employed women rose 5.4 percent from the year before, while the number of female employees overall fell 1.1 percent.
