Seneca College Involved In Third Award-Winning Chris Landreth Film

seneca [1]Subconscious Password [2], the latest film by OscarĀ®-winning director Chris Landreth [3] was produced by the National Film Board of Canada [4] (NFB) with the participation of Animation Arts Centre of Seneca College [5] and Copperheart Entertainment [6]. It recently had its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival [7] in France and won the prestigious Annecy Cristal for best short film. Landreth joined forces once again with producer Marcy Page of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), producer Mark Smith of Copperheart Entertainment, and the Seneca College Animation Arts Centre, who collaborated with him to make Ryan (2004) and The Spine (2009).

Ryan [8] won more than 60 awards, including the 2005 OscarĀ®for Best Animated Short Film, as well as prizes at Cannes and the Ottawa International Animation Festival. The Spine [9] was nominated for a Genie and was named one of Canada’s top 10 films of the year by the Toronto International Film Festival.

More than fifteen graduating students were given the opportunity to work on Subconscious Password with the support of five faculty members, as part of the Seneca Summer Animation Institute last year. After graduating, many of them were then hired to work on the project until it was completed in February. This is just one of countless examples of the hands-on learning Seneca students receive in preparation for their careers.

The majority of the film was produced at Seneca’s state-of-the-art Animation Arts Centre in Toronto, which provides industry-leading education in animation, digital animation, gaming, and visual effects for film and television. Three Seneca students also worked on the film from the NFB’s office in Montreal. Subconscious Password is the first Stereoscopic 3D film for Landreth and Seneca College.

Annecy is the most prestigious animation festival in the world and nearly 2,500 films were submitted for the 2013 competition. Some 185 films competed at the Annecy festival this year, over 50 of them in the Short Films category. Each year the Annecy festival presents the best animated films from around the world and the winning films often go onto receive Academy Award nominations.

With campuses across the Greater Toronto Area, Seneca offers degrees, diplomas and certificates renowned for their quality and respected by employers. Combining the highest academic standards with practical, hands-on learning, expert teaching faculty and the latest technology ensures Seneca graduates are career-ready.
