Adobe Systems Incorporated has announced at its MAX 2011 technology conference that the corporation has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Nitobi Software, the creator of PhoneGap and PhoneGap Build. PhoneGap is a popular open source platform for easily building fast, cross-platform mobile applications with HTML5 and JavaScript. With PhoneGap, Adobe® will offer developers the choice of two powerful solutions for cross-platform development of native mobile apps, one using HTML5 and JavaScript with PhoneGap and the other using Adobe Flash® with Adobe AIR®. PhoneGap’s open source framework has been downloaded more than 600,000 times to date and thousands of applications built using PhoneGap are available in mobile app stores that span devices based on Android, iOS, BlackBerry and other operating systems. On November 1, 2011, Montreal’s Transcontinental will implement a new operating structure in order to become more agile at meeting the multiplatform marketing communication needs of its customers. The operations of Transcontinental Media and Transcontinental Interactive will thus be combined into a single sector, “Transcontinental Media”, with Natalie Larivière as president. Ms. Larivière has been a driving force in the development of Transcontinental’s digital products and services since 2006. The sector will now be responsible for products and services in publishing, distribution, data analytics and management, as well as interactive marketing solutions (mobile, digital promotions, etc.) and digital media. “What does home mean to you?” From October 3 to November 14, Genworth Financial Mortgage Insurance Company Canada (Genworth Financial Canada) is inviting grade 4, 5 and 6 students across Canada to submit a written essay about the meaning of home.

Genworth Financial Canada’s 5^th Annual Meaning of Home Contest supports Habitat for Humanity Canada (“Habitat for Humanity”) and is intended to raise awareness among students on the importance of having a home. Postmedia Network has acquired Sprouter Inc., an Internet content company that specializes in the areas of technology, digital media, entrepreneurship and startups. Through the acquisition, Sprouter Inc. becomes a division of Postmedia Network Inc., but will continue to operate under the Sprouter name and branding under the leadership of Sarah Prevette.

The Ontario Media Development Corporation and DOC Toronto are hosting a workshop for documentary producers with Jennifer Blitz, Director of Tax Credits & Financing on October 5th. Ms. Blitz will do a hands-on presentation about the process of applying for Ontario Film and Television Tax Credits. The workshop will feature hypothetical case studies and strategies to help you maximize your returns. Documentary producer Jeannette Loakman (Peep Culture, Cat Ladies) will moderate. This workshop is free for DOC Members or $20.00 for Non-Members. Space for this event is limited to 40 attendees, with registration mandatory. The workshop will take place at Toronto’s NFB Mediatheque, 150 John Street 2nd Floor Atelier, beginning at 2:30 p.m. and running until 4:30 p.m.
