Ubisoft has announced the concentration of American operations for online games and of infrastructures for its global network in Montreal. In addition, the company will be investing in the expansion of its motion capture technologies expertise. This important technological and operational consolidation represents a total investment of 373 M$ over 7 years, and is expected to generate 500 new jobs in Quebec over the same period. The Writers’ Trust of Canada has revealed the finalists for two fiction prizes. The announcement was made at Ben McNally Books. The five finalists for the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, recognizing writers of the year’s best novel or short story collection, were announced by Jan Innes, vice president, government relations, Rogers Communications, along with writer and prize juror Alison Pick; the three finalists for the Writers’ Trust of Canada/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize, recognizing new and developing writers for the best short story first published in a Canadian literary journal during the previous year, were announced by juror and past prize winner Miranda Hill. The Interactive Fund is a program created in partnership between Creative BC and the BC Arts Council. The program is intended to support the production of high quality, original, interactive digital media content and software applications owned and controlled by BC companies or individuals. The funding is a non-recoupable advance of up to $50,000 and does not require matching funding or market support to trigger eligibility. The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Elizabeth Cannon as Chair of its Board of Directors for a three-year term commencing October 4, 2013. Dr. Cannon is President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calgary. She has led a distinguished career as a researcher and an academic administrator. Prior to her appointment as president, Dr. Cannon was dean of the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary. A partnership between Backroad Mapbooks and the Province is bringing the exciting activity of ‘geo-caching‘ to 18 of B.C.’s popular recreation sites and trails. In recognition of their 20th anniversary, Backroad Mapbooks has developed a GeoTour program to celebrate and promote Canada’s beautiful backcountry. The GeoTour is based on the popular recreation activity of ‘geo-caching’ – a modern-day treasure hunt that uses GPS co-ordinates to locate containers (called caches) and collect ‘treasures’ in a specific area or along a specific route.
