Support for first-person post-disaster survival sim The Long Dark on Kickstarter has been overwhelming. Yesterday, the game was named Project of the Day on Kickstarter, and the number of backers swelled past 3,500. The final push is on in this, the final week of the fundraising campaign, and those backers have pushed Hinterland Games to the 60% mark of its financing target with 8 days to go. A large contingent of Canadian representatives took part in the opening festivities of MIPCOM, the world’s leading entertainment content market across all platforms, which takes place in Cannes from October 7 to 10. To kick off MIPCOM 2013, Canada handed the title of MIPCOM Country of Honour over to Argentina and expressed its interest in continuing to build its relationship with Latin America’s audiovisual production industry. The Canada Media Fund (CMF) today featured Canada’s leading-edge and innovative transmedia series, games, software and mobile applications produced specifically for children and youth. Canadian projects were presented as part of a showcase organized by the CMF and Telefilm Canada to highlight Canadian content and talent at MIPCOM 2013. The CMF’s President and CEO, Valerie Creighton, presented a special screening of seven outstanding and diverse projects representative of Canada’s creative screen-based industry geared towards the youth market. Founded in 2010 in Toronto by Jim Woo and John McLachlan who have careers in the ad industry, The Comic Machine comics are unique because they are created and optimized for digital viewing on the iPad without the constraints of adapting an existing print edition. The app, available now on iTunes, uses xml code to control the display of dialogue bubbles and cropped images that float on layers above the page. With each tap the page builds and animates automatically and then rests to allow the user to read before loading the next set of actions.
