The finalists in sixteen categories were announced today for the upcoming Canadian Videogame Awards, which will be held in Vancouver on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at the Vancouver Convention Centre in conjunction with Fan Expo Vancouver. Over 100 nominations were received this year from all parts of Canada, with 25 games represented in the list of finalists. All awards are for work developed in Canada and released in 2012. I was very happy to see this announcement – I had tweeted several weeks ago that I’d like to see Elias as this year’s host. The producers of the Canadian Videogame Awards are delighted to announce that Elias Toufexis will be the host for this year’s show, to be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on April 20, 2013. The world’s largest touring exhibition on the evolution of video games makes its first Canadian appearance at the Ontario Science Centre. With more than 150 playable games, Game On 2.0 charts key game developments from 1962 to the present day; from the very first commercial coin-operated pinball game to the latest in virtual reality, multi-player experiences and 3D video games. After a successful and diverse turnout at last year’s 2012 GDC Play debut, GDC Play comes back to San Francisco in 2013. With this year’s return comes the introduction of Best in Play, a showcase of GDC Play’s finest games. For this new ‘Best in Play’ award program, all GDC Play exhibitors will be judged on their in-development or complete games by a panel of veteran GDC organizers and Gamasutra editors. Eight participating games will be selected and announced as ‘Best in Play’ winners prior to GDC. Winners will be announced mid-February and they will receive two All-Access passes to GDC 2014. Special ‘Best in Play’ designations will be attached to the honorees’ GDC Play kiosks at GDC 2013, where their games will be playable to all GDC attendees. Read the rest of this entry »
