Telefilm Canada continues to support emerging feature film talent through its Micro-Budget Production Program for a second year. Through this Program, Telefilm will support between eight to ten projects through the Main Component, and up to three projects in the new Aboriginal component. This Program also seeks to stimulate the use of digital distribution platforms and increase audience access to the works of new Canadian talent, aiming to increase support and visibility for Aboriginal creators through the Aboriginal component. Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk got a hands-on demonstration today of a haul-truck simulator during a visit to the College of the Rockies. The college bought four stationary haul-truck simulators and one mobile simulator through funding totalling more than $2.8 million. Funding sources included $580,000 from the Province, $560,000 from the Columbia Basin Trust, and more than $1.7 million through Western Economic Diversification. Read the rest of this entry »

The Canada Media Fund (CMF) announced today a new pilot program designed to offer existing Experimental Stream funded projects with increased access to mentorship, markets, and capital. The Accelerator Partnership Pilot Program (A3P), with a budget of $360K, will support digital media projects that have previously received Experimental Stream funding for development or production by enabling their producers to enroll in acceleration programs. The Canada Media Fund (CMF) reminds stakeholders that they are invited to attend one of the focus groups that are part of the CMF’s cross-country consultation. Stakeholders can quickly and easily register online. By registering, stakeholders can help the CMF plan the meetings according to expected attendance. This month, focus groups are being held in Montreal, Ottawa, and in the Eastern provinces. The 2013 consultation tour wraps-up in Iqaluit on November 14th. Toronto Public Library (TPL) has launched an advertising campaign to inform people about its selection of current, popular and free e-books and e-magazines. Commuters will see ads promoting TPL’s e-books and e-magazines on subways, streetcars and outdoor shelters. This is part of a long-term strategy to increase awareness of e-content. Canada’s access to information and privacy laws should be modernized in order to protect these important rights in the face of dramatic technological change and the demands of engaged citizens, said the country’s access to information and privacy guardians in a Joint Resolution issued today. In their resolution, Information and Privacy Commissioners and Ombudspersons from across the country urge federal, provincial and territorial governments to update their respective laws. They noted that recent revelations about government surveillance programs have heightened Canadians’ concerns about the erosion of their privacy rights and have prompted calls for increased transparency and greater oversight. Work is underway to adapt more open textbooks for use by students and instructors in British Columbia with today’s open call for proposals to begin the second phase of the project, which will ultimately see 40 open textbooks available for students and instructors in highly enrolled first- and second-year subject areas. The first phase involved faculty reviews of 15 open textbooks, in subject areas ranging from math and chemistry to marketing, psychology, and business. A large contingent of Canadian representatives took part in the opening festivities of MIPCOM, the world’s leading entertainment content market across all platforms, which takes place in Cannes from October 7 to 10. To kick off MIPCOM 2013, Canada handed the title of MIPCOM Country of Honour over to Argentina and expressed its interest in continuing to build its relationship with Latin America’s audiovisual production industry. Creative BC will provide BC-based film or television entertainment companies with an envelope of money to support the development of two or more eligible film, television or digital media projects in the form of a non-recoupable development advance of up to $50,000. The fund is intended to leverage investment from the private sector, develop a presence in the international marketplace, and encourage development, production and marketing strategies which address new opportunities in digital media and online.
