The Canada Media Fund has released a new study (PDF) on the Aboriginal screen-based production sector paints a portrait of a dynamic and vibrant industry sector. Producers in the sector typically employ Aboriginal Peoples, combine the roles of producer, writer and director and create original productions in Aboriginal languages. The report prepared by Maria De Rosa, President of Communications MDR, and her Associate, Marilyn Burgess, examined the state of Aboriginal television, interactive and feature film production in Canada and measured production activity over the five-year period 2007-2008 to 2011-2012. According to PwC’s annual Global Entertainment and Media Outlook 2013-2017 (available by paid subscription), spending on traditional media will continue to dominate over the next five years– the 9% of overall consumer E&M spend on digital content in 2012 will rise to just 16% of total spend in 2017. However, digital innovation is crucial for E&M companies in North America, the South Pacific and Western Europe and will be a key priority for these markets over the next five years. A new report released today by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) reveals the Canadian wireless sector generated an overall economic benefit of $50.2 billion in 2011, an increase of 16.7% from the $43 billion in 2010. The Benefit of the Wireless Telecommunications Industry to the Canadian Economy study, conducted by Nordicity, concludes that the Canadian wireless sector’s economic benefit has increased dramatically, as Canadians’ adoption of smartphones, tablets and mobile data services and applications has also increased at a rapid pace. Canadian women are significantly underrepresented in key creative and content-creating roles in Canada’s TV production industry. This means the stories and values communicated through the influential and far-reaching medium of television are badly skewed, according to a report released today by non-profit organization Women in View. In its report Women in View on TV 2013, the organization examined 21 Canadian live action television series, which, in 2010-2011, received a total of $99.1 million in public funding by the government’s Canada Media Fund. Productions examined include Being Erica, Flashpoint, The Listener, Rookie Blue, Republic of Doyle, The Borgias, Heartland, Murdoch Mysteries, Hiccups, Lost Girl, and Little Mosque on the Prairie. Sage North America today released findings of the Sage SMB Hiring Outlook Survey, which examined the hiring trends of Canadian small and midsized businesses in 2013 and their perception of how measures introduced in the recent federal budget will impact their business. The survey found that of businesses surveyed, 19 per cent have hired or will hire in 2013. Of those businesses hiring, 77 per cent reported that a stronger demand for their company’s services or products is the driving force for their need to hire, followed by improved economic outlook (23 per cent) and the availability of a better pool of desirable candidates (11 per cent). PayPal has revealed the findings of a global study that paints a dim future for the wallet, especially in the Canadian market. Almost nine in ten (87%) Canadians indicated they wished they did not have to carry a wallet followed by a vast majority (83%) of respondents across five countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, the U.S. and the U.K.) wishing they were wallet-free. Nearly one in four Canadians (23%) and almost half of Canadians (47.9%) between the ages of 18 and 24 would choose a smartphone over a wallet if they could only bring one item when going out.
