ACM SIGGRAPH has announced the selection of Elliot Kotek, co-founder of Not Impossible Labs, as the keynote speaker at SIGGRAPH 2014, the 41st International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, 10-14 August 2014 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The current content chief and co-founder of Not Impossible Labs, and editor-in-chief of Not Impossible Now, Kotek is also the founder and editor-in-chief of Beyond Cinema and the former editor-in-chief of both Moving Pictures and Celebs.com. Arts and culture organizations and developing artists can now apply for funding assistance through the BC Art Council’s Early Career Development Program. The program supports early career artists wanting to develop their practice while building their portfolio, professional exposure and/or career experience through co-op placement, internship, residency or mentorship. The provincially funded program supports the development of knowledge, learning and capacity within the sector to create opportunities for the next generation of artists and practitioners. BC’s Government is inviting written submissions from students, the private career training sector and the public to guide the development of legislation and supporting regulations needed to regulate the sector in British Columbia. As a result of a core review, government announced its intention on April 17, 2014, to directly regulate the private career training sector. Before that can happen, legislation is required to dissolve the Private Career Training Institution Agency and transfer its functions to the Ministry of Advanced Education. CBC News will be re-creating the events of this pivotal World War II event in an interactive breaking news timeline, online and on CBC News Network, CBC Radio, and during CBC Television live special programming. If World War II had happened in a multi-media era, this is how CBC News would have covered it. On June 5th and 6th, World War II veterans and world leaders will come together in France to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day. British Columbia is now developing 20 open, online textbooks specifically for post-secondary skills training and technical programs. The online textbooks will be developed based on an open call for proposals, and will be available online starting September 2015. The 20 online textbooks for skills training and technical programs are in addition to the 19 made available in 2013 and the 21 others expected to be ready by September 2014 for 40 highly enrolled first-year and second-year post-secondary subjects. Taking place as part of inaugural GO Fest (Whistler Great Outdoors Festival) this weekend, Whistler Film Festival‘s Adventure Film Series features a 20-film lineup from six countries comprised of a selection of the world’s best independent outdoor, adventure films from extreme sport to activism through adventure. The series includes eight screenings over three days from May 16 to 18, 2014. Sailing, Surfing, Climbing, Mountain Climbing, Free skiing, Mountain Biking, Hiking, Ultra Marathon Running and Paddling are among some of the film themes, which include five features and three short programs.
