British Columbia is expanding the Digital Animation or Visual Effects tax credit to post-production activities, and extending the Interactive Digital Media tax credit to 2018, Minister of Finance Michael de Jong announced today with the introduction of Balanced Budget 2015. As promised, the Digital Animation or Visual Effects (DAVE) tax credit will apply to labour expenditures on eligible post-production activities for productions where principal photography begins on or after March 1, 2015. DHX Media, a key player internationally in the creation of content for families and children, announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Vancouver-based Nerd Corps Entertainment Inc. and its subsidiaries for approximately $57 million. The transaction is anticipated to close by December 24, 2014. The acquisition increases DHX’s operating leverage, adding Nerd Corps’ animation studio in Vancouver, which features five lines of production, as well as Nerd Corps’ interactive apps, gaming expertise, and licensing opportunities with Nerd Corps’ brands. via DigiBC: Introduced in 2010, the Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit legislation is set to phase out in 2015 pending a review by the BC government in late 2014. Our DigiBC survey indicates that from 2009 to 2013, 1,700 new jobs have been created and the industry has expanded to 5,700 direct jobs working in 142 companies in the video games sector. We estimate the government has paid over $100 million in cash based tax credits which have in turn resulted in a tax surplus of $135 million to the BC government. It is essential that the Interactive Digital Media tax Credit is extended at a minimum and better if it is enhanced if we want to become number one in Canada again. We need your support and help! This week, British Columbia takes centre stage to demonstrate the province’s growing strength in technology and digital arts during SIGGRAPH 2014, the world’s foremost computer graphics and art conference held at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Vancouver first hosted SIGGRAPH in 2011 and is the only city outside of the U.S.A. that has ever been selected for the North American conference. Voices.com will be exhibiting at the SIGGRAPH 2014 conference and exhibition in Vancouver at the Vancouver Convention Centre, with the exhibition component taking place August 12th to the 14th. Voices is part of a delegation representing the province of Ontario. SIGGRAPH’s commercial exhibition attracts hundreds of exhibitors from around the world. SIGGRAPH 2014, 10-14 August, has released its list of 2014 Emerging Technologies highlights to be featured at this year?s conference at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Out of almost 90 submissions to the program, 24 were accepted, with more than 20 pieces from submitters outside of the United States. Each year, SIGGRAPH-selected emerging technologies allow conference attendees to play with the latest interactive and graphics developments. The program also presents demonstrations of research in several fields — like displays, input devices, collaborative environments, and robotics — through Talks and a close partnership with the SIGGRAPH Studio.
