Branded Entertainment is seldom understood outside the marketing industry, yet it could pave the way to greater collaboration in the creation and financing of original Canadian screen content. The second white paper in a three-part study, released today by the Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) as a prelude to discussions at their annual conference Prime Time in Ottawa next week, explores the issues faced by Canadian content creators when it comes to working with brands as this trend increases towards integrated, cross-platform campaigns. Northumberland CFDC, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing financing and strategy for entrepreneurs has issued a call for entrants for its 2014 N100 competition. N100 is a competition for startup companies with the potential to grow, innovate and create jobs in Northumberland, Ontario. There is no need to be currently located in Northumberland to participate, and a $100,000 in investment capital is available. Commercial drivers in B.C. can organize smarter and more efficient trips thanks to a new DriveBC route planner. The Commercial Vehicle (CV) Route Planner is a free online feature that provides truckers with locations and details of potential clearance restrictions. This new planning tool will assist truckers when applying to the ministry for an oversize/overweight single trip permit. A total of 27 new interactive digital media projects have received a combined total of $6.5 million as part of the Canada Media Fund’s (CMF) Experimental Stream second round of funding for development and marketing support. Eight of those projects will receive a total of $1.6 million for Marketing Support, while $4.9 million will provide Development Support to 19 game, interactive content platform and social media projects. The Canada Media Fund (CMF) and Telefilm Canada are seeking suggestions and ideas from the industry to feature Canadian productions and talent at upcoming MIPTV and MIPCOM events in 2014, the world’s premiere television markets. In 2012, Canada was featured as Country of Honour at MIPCOM. Combined marketing, public relations and media strategies heightened awareness of Canadian productions and talent as well as the country as a strong co-production partner. DigiBC will be hosting another town hall meeting at the BC Showcase in Robson Square on the evening of Thursday, February 6th. Introduced in 2010, the IDMTC legislation is set to phase out in 2015 pending a review by the BC government in 2014. Telefilm Canada has announced that it is supporting the production of five feature films, two in English and three in French, through the Canada Feature Film Fund (CFFF). A total of $3.7 million in funding is being invested in the selected projects for the second quarter of 2013-2014. Please note that on September 19, 2013, Telefilm announced $12 million in funding support for nine feature-film projects for the first quarter of 2013-2014, and in an industry advisory on January 6, 2014, Telefilm announced $4 million in financing for 18 lower-budget feature-film projects. Telefilm Canada has announced its support for 18 lower budget English-language productions (with budgets under $2.5 million) from the Ontario and Nunavut, Western as well as Atlantic regions through the Canada Feature Film Fund. The new year will open in high style for Canadian cinema as the Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) has selected Canada as country of honour for the Festival’s 25th anniversary edition. This focus on Canada marks the dazzling renewal of the Telefilm Canada-PSIFF partnership launched in 2013, one that promises to be very fruitful for Canada’s film industry. Canadian filmmakers Louise Archambault (Gabrielle), Shawney Cohen (The Manor), Craig Goodwill (Patch Town), Bruce LaBruce (Gerontophilia), Don McKellar (The Grand Seduction), Richie Mehta (Siddharth), Sébastien Pilote (Le Démantèlement) and Wiebke von Carolsfeld (Stay) will be in the spotlight in Palm Springs. As part of its program redesign initiative and following a series of consultations with the industry, Telefilm Canada is making changes to the Performance Envelope component of its Production Program. The Performance Envelope component will be replaced with a Fast Track stream. The main goal of this latest revision is to recognize and reward the success of production companies that have demonstrated an ability to produce feature films that have achieved a very high level of success on a regular basis by offering them access to a fast track funding process.
