The Canada Media Fund (CMF) informs all applicants that the Exploitation and Gross Sales Reports reports have been combined into one report. Applicants will benefit from filling out one streamlined report and will able to track its status once it has been submitted. Both reports have been simplified into an online form that will be available as of Thursday, January 2, 2014. The CMF will no longer accept hardcopy (paper) applications for this reporting period. Telefilm Canada has released the highlights of its 2012-2013 annual report at its fifth Annual Public Assembly, held this year at the PHI Centre in Montreal. Under the theme Talent First, Chair of the Board, Michel Roy, and Executive Director, Carolle Brabant, presented the results that showed a growing interest in Canadian film, especially on the international scene. While BC Premier Clark was meeting government officials and discussing LNG opportunities in Japan, British Columbia’s business contingent was also hard at work in Tokyo, building relationships and exploring opportunities in the private sector. As the world’s third-largest economy and a high-tech powerhouse, Japan is a leading export destination for British Columbia and a desirable partner for business and investment. If personal data is the “new oil” of the Internet, then Big Data is the “machinery” that runs on it. Like our dependence on fossil fuels, Big Data’s current consumption of personal data is not sustainable. Individuals require privacy; their personal information must be protected in new and bigger ways. As a response to this urgent need, Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, Dr. Ann Cavoukian, and Drummond Reed, co-founder and CEO of the San Francisco company Respect Network, have developed the concept of Big Privacy, which is illustrated in a new white paper, Big Privacy: Bridging Big Data and the Personal Data Ecosystem through Privacy by Design. A total of 18 Francophone productions from outside Québec will receive over $4.7 million in funding through the Canada Media Fund’s Francophone Minority Program. The Canadian Interactive Industry Profile 2012 (CIIP), which provides an in-depth look at the interactive digital media (IDM) industry in Canada, was released today during Interactive Ontario’s X-Summit programming at nextMEDIA. This report follows two previous editions of the Canadian Interactive Industry Profiles released in 2006 and 2008 but proposes a revised methodology that includes a more narrowed definition of the digital media industry to provide more of a focus on companies creating true “rich interactive experiences” (in terms of content creation) and those that supply services that directly enable other firms to create those experiences. Teresa Wat, Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism, has announced that the Government of BC, in partnership with the BC Hate Crimes Team and Abbotsford Community Services, will develop a creative educational campaign and resource to raise awareness about online hate crime . This resource will provide online education and awareness about racial and religiously motivated hate crimes, including information about what constitutes a hate crime and how to report a hate crime.
