SIGGRAPH 2014 will offer presentations on more than 15 of the biggest current and upcoming studio productions, including X-Men: Days of Future Past, Gravity, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. ACM SIGGRAPH has announced the selection of Elliot Kotek, co-founder of Not Impossible Labs, as the keynote speaker at SIGGRAPH 2014, the 41st International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, 10-14 August 2014 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. The current content chief and co-founder of Not Impossible Labs, and editor-in-chief of Not Impossible Now, Kotek is also the founder and editor-in-chief of Beyond Cinema and the former editor-in-chief of both Moving Pictures and Celebs.com. Via Xbox Wire: Microsoft Studios has acquired the rights to the “Gears of War” franchise from Epic Games, including rights to all existing and future games, entertainment experiences and merchandise. In addition, Microsoft announced that Black Tusk Studios in Vancouver will take over development of the “Gears of War” franchise and that Rod Fergusson, former Director of Production at Epic Games on the “Gears of War” franchise, will join Microsoft and play a key studio leadership role at Black Tusk on the development of the franchise going forward. SIGGRAPH 2014 will take place next 12-14 August in Vancouver, and if you book your space now, you’ll pay only $37.00 USD per square foot with a 10% deposit due on booking. The price goes up on September 4th to $38.00 per square foot, and a 50% deposit will be required to secure your space if you apply after September 12th. Exhibit applications submitted after February 15, 2014 will require payment in full. SIGGRAPH 2014 in Vancouver is an incredible marketing opportunity for Canadian companies – this is your chance to show off Canadian talent and innovation to a global audience – on our own turf. Ubisoft has officially announced what most of us knew yesterday – that the corporation has acquised THQ Montreal as well as the publishing rights for the upcoming South Park: The Stick of Truth video game, being developed externally by Obsidian. In addition to the team at THQ Montreal, Ubisoft also acquired a new, yet-to-be announced IP in development at the studio. THQ Montreal will join Ubisoft’s development teams, already the second-largest in-house development staff in the world with 26 studios in 19 countries and more than 6,250 people dedicated to video game production. Online combat strategy game developer Kixeye announced yesterday that it is expanding to Canada, and will be opening a new game development studio based in Victoria. This marks the third office for Kixeye, and second international studio opened this year, previously announcing its expansion to Brisbane, Australia.
